Sunday Had the Final Word

The APBL playoffs do not care how a matchup felt on Monday. They do not care who looked comfortable on Thursday. They do not care what the margin looked like heading into the weekend, and they sure do not care about regular-season résumés once the bracket gets involved.

In Round 1, Sunday had the final word.

Baltimore used the last day of the week to turn a solid playoff win into a statement against the defending champions. Los Angeles waited until the final day to steal a game from Boston that it had been chasing all week. Miami led St. Louis from start to finish, but still had to survive a late squeeze before punching its ticket. Chicago got back in the win column after seeing its historic streak end, but Arizona made sure the Cubs had to feel the pressure before moving on.

Four teams survived. Four teams went home. And now the APBL is down to its final four, with the American League and National League Championship matchups set for Week 24.

The bracket has the microphone now.

Angels Rally Late - Angels 240, Red Sox 234

The Angels spent almost the entire week chasing Boston.

Then Sunday showed up with a Rally Monkey grin.

Los Angeles trailed throughout the matchup and found itself down by as many as 43 points on Friday. Boston had control. Boston had the lead. Boston had every reason to believe it was headed to the American League Championship. But playoff weeks have a funny way of saving their sharpest teeth for the final day.

The Angels delivered a 54-point Sunday while Boston managed only 18, and that swing flipped the entire matchup. Los Angeles escaped with a 240-234 victory and advanced by just six points.

That is playoff baseball at its cruelest and most beautiful. Boston had beaten Los Angeles twice during the regular season, but the Angels won the one that mattered most. They now move into the AL Championship riding a six-game winning streak, carrying the kind of momentum that makes every opponent check the scoreboard twice before getting comfortable.

Orioles Make a Statement - Orioles 379, Rangers 233

Baltimore did not just beat Texas.

Baltimore sent the defending champions home.

The Rangers kept the contest within 57 points throughout the week, staying close enough to make the Orioles work and reminding everyone that championship pedigree does not disappear just because the seed line changes. Texas knew this stage. Texas had survived this stage before. That history mattered right up until Baltimore decided it did not.

On Sunday, the Orioles unleashed the kind of pitching day that changes the whole shape of a playoff matchup. Baltimore received 101 points from five pitchers, with the lowest starter still scoring 15 and the top arm delivering 25. That final-day push turned a controlled advantage into a 146-point victory.

The final score was 379-233, and the message was loud enough for the rest of the bracket to hear. In the playoffs, yesterday’s banner does not spot you points. Baltimore is now riding a three-game winning streak into the American League Championship, and the Orioles look every bit like a No. 1 seed ready to keep swinging.

Marlins Survive the Cardinals - Marlins 268, Cardinals 253

Miami led this matchup wire to wire, with the exception of a Tuesday tie, but nobody wearing Marlins colors was breathing easily by the end.

That tells you everything about playoff baseball.

The Marlins built an 89-point lead by Thursday, which should have felt comfortable. Against St. Louis, it did not. The Cardinals chipped away, cutting that lead to 62 by Friday and continuing to apply pressure through the weekend. Miami never surrendered control, but the matchup tightened enough to make the final stretch feel much closer than the week once looked.

The Marlins held on for a 268-253 victory, advancing to the National League Championship with a nine-game winning streak intact. That streak matters. Miami has been one of the league’s most consistent powers all season, and now the Marlins are one step away from playing for the APBL title.

St. Louis exits after ending Chicago’s sixteen-game winning streak in Week 22 and then pushing Miami harder than the early-week margin suggested. The Cardinals did not go quietly. Miami simply had enough to survive.

Cubs Reset and Advance - Cubs 169, Diamondbacks 141

Chicago did not light up the scoreboard in Round 1.

Luckily for the Cubs, they did not need to.

After seeing their sixteen-game winning streak end in the final week of the regular season, Chicago entered the playoffs needing to reset quickly against an Arizona team that had just stolen the final National League ticket in dramatic fashion. The Diamondbacks brought emotion, momentum, and a dangerous nothing-to-lose feel into the matchup. Early on, they made it interesting.

Arizona led by 10 after Monday, but Chicago answered on Tuesday and never gave the lead back. The Cubs stretched the advantage to 99 by Friday, only for Arizona to keep fighting. The Diamondbacks trimmed the gap to 31 on Saturday and closed within 28 by the end of the week, but they ran out of days.

Chicago advanced with a 169-141 victory, surviving a lower-scoring effort that would have been dangerous against any other playoff opponent this week. It was not pretty, but it was enough, and in September, enough is a full sentence.

Arizona’s season ends one week after its biggest moment. The Diamondbacks stole the ticket, made the dance, and gave Chicago a push. That is a strong first APBL season, even if the final step came up short.

Week 24 Preview: Championship Round

The APBL is down to four teams.

In the American League Championship, No. 1 Baltimore meets No. 2 Los Angeles. The teams split their two regular-season matchups in 2026, and across their previous four meetings, the all-time series is also split 3-3. The Angels won the most recent matchup in Week 20 by 13 points, and they enter this game riding a six-game winning streak. Baltimore counters with the top seed, a three-game winning streak, and a Round 1 performance that knocked out the defending champions with authority.

This one has heavyweight energy. Baltimore has been the American League’s standard. Los Angeles is walking in hot. Something has to give.

In the National League Championship, No. 1 Chicago meets No. 2 Miami in the matchup the league has been building toward for weeks. The Cubs and Marlins finished the regular season with identical 17-5 records and tied at the top of the final Power Rankings. Chicago claimed the No. 1 seed by only five total points, 6,144 to 6,139. Their head-to-head history is brief because this is Miami’s first season in the APBL, but the two regular-season meetings were split 1-1. Miami won the first meeting by 99 points. Chicago answered in the second by 72.

Now the argument gets settled in the bracket.

Four teams remain. Baltimore. Los Angeles. Chicago. Miami.

Sunday had the final word in Round 1.

Week 24 gets the next one.
